The Club regularly volunteer at the Semaphore Carousel, assisting in the running of this historic item. We do this on behalf of the Rotary Club of Henley Beach who manage the Carousel for members/benefactors Frank & Jan Schirippa. Members enjoy engaging with young families, and those reliving experiences from many years ago – usually with their grandchildren. As the Carousel has been modified to enable disabled to also ride (for free), it provides a welcome respite to carers. We see this activity as a “feel good” that enables Rotary to positively impact on families.
The Carousel was first located at Henley Beach from 1928 before being permanently relocated to the Semaphore foreshore in 1938. The Semaphore Carousel is a rare surviving example of the carousels that were a popular attraction at South Australia's seaside resorts and followed the traveling show circuit. This beautiful vintage carousel which is the largest in Australia was built in 1928.
